“You wanna play rough? OK! I play rough! Say hello to my little friend!” -Al Pachino as Scarface
The healthcare debate is like an aggressive chess game. The Republicans are busy with their own brand of cheerleaders and sideshows. They have figured out a way to enlist those who oppose the president to aid in their special brand of cheering. Or booing or what have you. Meanwhile, their best people are towing the party line instead of coming up with alternative ideas that will provide the uninsured with healthcare. You might think they aren’t interested in getting the uninsured insurance. They seem to have focused on keeping things as they have been.
I am smart enough to know that every yahoo screaming misplaced insinuations that Obama is somehow like a Nazi is a fucking moron. I am smart enough to know that there are good republicans (?) who have valid concerns about how we will pay for any and or everything. And these people’s voices cannot be heard at the moment. Some of them aren’t speaking up. Some of them aren’t speaking up because they have nothing to say. Some of them aren’t speaking up because they don’t exactly disagree with the plan in general and are taking a wait and see approach. These are the people who need to speak up.
Im not disappointed at the ignorant followers who don’t know any Jews and have no idea what happened in Nazi Germany but who know that their leadership keeps urging them to unite and dispute these ‘changes’ as being Nazi like. Im surprised the Republican foot soldiers aren’t whispering to their constituents that the new president wants to enslave them and make them pick cotton and not pay them. Yes sir. I’m surprised they haven;t used slavery as a scare tactic for their hurt and confused base. It would make about as much sense. Which, incase my idea isn’t clear….doesn’t.
I am disappointed in the Republicans I know and like who are sitting back quietly and watching the madness without making a point to themselves and others that there is a rational voice that can disagree with reason and without thinly veiled hate and hurt feelings. I know there are Republicans out there with ideas to add to the debate. I know there are. But trying to find them is hard when the party is busy with misdirection instead of valid ideas.
I am a registered Independent. I every election I have voted in I made my own ballot. I never voted straight party for either side. People like me, who actually look at more than the party when considering a vote… we like to know what you claim you will do once in office. I know you probably won’t do that but I would like to know what you would do if you could.
Our president might actually get something done that he said he would. Neat idea. Currently he is taking a beating with all the side issues. But the fact of the matter is, if he wants reform he can kick his party in the ass and get it. So if you aren’t on his side and he will get some form of reform… and he is asking you for your help and support… shouldnt you consider adding valuable input? Shouldnt you raise your concerns and your possible solutions?
Because if he wants to play rough isn’t it likely that you will lose? And if you do loose doesn’t that mean you are basically going to be sitting with your fingers crossed, hoping that the president’s policy fail? Because what happens if you and yours have opposed something that works out and ends up being popular? Seems to me like you are taking a gamble. A big one. One that if it doesnt pay off could mean the end of your career in public service. And if you are gambling with your life, isnt that like suicide?
You can pull out all the stops and mislead and misinform. But if you lose what then? Political suicide? What then? No one in the Republican leadership is looking ahead. They never figured Obama would become president and they are still trying to get up off the mat from that. They never saw it coming. They still haven’t gotten over one of their best in Colin Powell endorsed Obama. They never saw it coming. They never could make up for picking the wrong vice presidential candidate in an election they should not have lost. They never saw that comming. The first question is why didn’t they? The second question is what arent they seeing now?
(I would like to suggest that much like the power of the internet in the last presidential campaign, the GOP is focused on winning elections in an era that is gone and wont ever come back. There is no new thinking. You can only scare so many old people into voting. Young people vote now too. And there are places where the GOP has nothing to offer young people. On closer examination there isn’t much they have to offer at all…. Except the prospect of having to work to win states they used to win easily…)
No clear leadership. The only agreement is that Obama is the enemy. And they have not offered ideas to counter the policies that will end up being healthcare reform. They don’t see it coming. Three years from now, what will The Grand Old Party not see coming that in hind sight we will have all seen?
When Obama whips out his ‘little friend’ and gets some form of healthcare and the GOP celebrate the things they had removed as victory.. we may one day look back on that as the day they fell on their sword and killed their party as we have known it.
